Iron Deficiency Management
Many women suffer from low iron stores. It is important that the reasons for iron deficiency are fully understood as it can be due to underlying conditions.
Dr Wise can provide intravenous iron to women who have difficulty taking oral iron supplements and she can also advise on any testing or further medical management for heavy menstrual bleeding if this is the primary cause. If you under 18 years of age you may need referral to a clinic for intravenous iron if you are unable to take oral supplements. Other conditions that may cause fatigue such as hypothyroidism and vitamin B12 deficiency, autoimmune conditions and fibromyalgia can also be assessed if required.
Iron is found in many plant-based foods such as:
- Green vegetables (such as spinach, silverbeet and broccoli)
- Lentils and beans
- Nuts and seeds
- Grains (such as whole wheat; brown rice and fortified breakfast cereals)
- Dried fruit
The iron in animal-based foods is easier to absorb than the iron in plant-based foods. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you need to take extra care with your diet to get enough iron.
Coffee, tea, and wine can interfere with iron absorption as can calcium-rich foods such as dairy products or calcium supplements.
